Last year, I excitedly posted that the Cubs were rolling the dice for MB. As you are painfully aware, they rolled those dice and came up with uh…whatever is the craps version of a Whammy. But it ends today. It's a like a big crazy weight has been lifted on my shoulders.
Oh. But replaced by an ever bigger - but less crazy - weight. Carlos Silva. In addition to being equally unwanted, he costs more (though the Ms will be sending over some cash) and comes to Wrigley with an ERA of 8.60 last season and 6.46 the year before that, with an equally nauseating WHIP. Did I mention that he hails from a pitcher-friendly park? But on the plus side, he's almost as big as Big Z. (Big S?) And unlike his counterpart in the trade, he doesn't want us all to die…yet, anyway.
So personally, I think this deal sucks. But, after last season, the line to take MB off our hands wasn't exactly wrapping around the block. Let's put blame where blame lies, though. Milton is not, and has never really been, the ballsy power lefty the Cubs wanted him to be. He hits better from the right and he rocks at getting on base - not driving in runs or coming through in the clutch. Unfortunately, he is also - as the professionals say - batshit crazy. So, despite our hopes & his talent, taking a chance on Milton Bradley for three years with high expectations in front of a passionate, devoted, fervent, oft-rabid fanbase maybe - just maybe - wasn't the best idea from the current (soon-to-be former) Cubs GM.

*UPDATE* Jim Hendry (probably upon reading CUBblogging...) takes blame for MB fiasco. In other news: bears do shit in the woods, the pope is Catholic and Dolly Parton does indeed sleep on her back.

Well, happy MD is gone, not thrilled that some fat, also bat shit crazy guy is coming on over (he and Z will be BFF's!), but you know, just the drama that surrounds MB is enough to affect a team. I don't know anything about this new Cub, but Merry Christmas to all Cubs fans. Ding dong, MB is gone!
Hey Jen. You're the first person that I thought of when I read about this trade. Siva and Z could make for some very fun and exciting headlines this season. MB was like a cancer that had to be ripped out. I think it's a good move, AND they may turn around and trade Silva for something of real value.
BTW, Sexy (and funny) new Banner! eldetioNice way to start the New Year!
Hi Jon! Good point, I guess I kind of had the mindset like we are *stuck* with Silva but it's possible we'll never even see him in a Cubs uniform. Then again, it's also possibly Jim Hendry is issuing him a full no-trade clause at this very moment. ;)
Merry Christmas indeed, KD! Where's JJ? She's got to be psyched. Maybe we can get her to write MB a farewell limerick.
OMG, JJ SO has to write a farewell limerick, she's so good at it!
Isn't there some kind of rule or limit on the number of fat, crazy pitchers you can have on a team?
I think the number depends on the amount of overweight, "laidback" catchers your team has. I'd say we're good for now, unless Jim Hendry starts eyeballing Jose Valverde too.
Boy that Wrigley clubhouse just keeps getting smaller and smaller...
and the players keep getting fatter and fatter......
Too funny!
Do you think Hendry read your "no-trade clause" comment? I do hope he understands sarcasm. Seems to have irony down pat.
Big Z and Big S or BS for short...lol. Maybe he will get traded away for some sunflower seeds or some new towels, so could be we won't get to see him in a Cubs uni.
"BS"...love it Blue!
I was out of touch for the weekend and just now heard of the trade. Not that we got much for him, but anything is better than keeping the game king.
Limerick as requested:
The once was a psycho named Bradley
Who had an iron clad contract, quite sadly
After one final meltdown,
He was ran out of Chi-town,
And fans rejoiced madly.
On other sadder, and more shocking news - Can you believe Brittney Murphy died? She was so young! (32)
:D!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "Ode to the Game King" is my favorite yet, JJ.
I was shocked to hear about Brittany too, only 32 - just awful. Of course, everyone's whispering the heart attack was brought on by drugs or anorexia. Either way, very sad.
LOVE the limerick JJ!
And yes, very sad about Brittany Murphy. I'm guessing either eating d/o or drugs-she was awfully thin recently. Same thing happened to a guy I went to high school with about two weeks ago-his heart just stopped beating. No one knows why. Very weird. And sad.
Whoa KD, that is freaky. You occasionally hear those stories on the news (I don't know any personally, thankfully) but it doesn't make it any less disconcerting.
Hi all.
I too was shocked when I read about Brittany Murphy, very sad.
As for the Cubs, I read that the Yankees contacted the Cubbies about Big Z, but that the asking price was too high. I also read that Matt Capps is interested in becoming a Cub.
I wouldn't be surprised if they sign Capps. I mean, after all,he IS mediocre. And mediocre is what Jim Hendry does best.
No sarcasm at all was used in the above statement.
Don't forget - not only will we sign him...but it'll be for more money and more years than any other team would've even thought about. (Since our big competition is the Nats and everything. Kind of like last year with MB & the Rays.)
How many years does Hendry have on his contract? I'm not buying that his hands are tied by "the money people". He has made some huge blunders these last couple of years.I think he has to go.
Damn, I miss baseball season. How much longer do we have to go?
Sorting thru these baseball cards isn't helping either.
Merry Christmas Jen, KD, JJ and all Cubs fans out there.
Well Jason Bay is now a Met and we STILL don't have anyone to replace MB.
And what is this talk about Jose Contreras and Ryan Spilborgh's for Reed Johnson, what is up with that?
I got nothing on either, Blue. (As in, neither makes an abundance of sense for me. And Spilborghs < Reed, so why not just keep Reed?)
With the Mets locking in Bay, I can't see a situation where the Cards DON'T end up with Crotchy McNoCatch. :( I hate them.
UGH! I thought the last off-season was the worst ever! I think this once tops that one. So many expectations , so little results.
Just a thought, but Johnny Damon is still out there, do ya'll think that maybe the Cubs should talk to him and see what the dilly o is?
In case you haven't heard yet, DeRo is a SF Giant now.
